A career in professional sports
The world of sports looks exciting and glamorous! Can you also make a career in sports? Yes, if you have the talent and are willing to put in a great deal of effort and dedication.
1.1. _____Sportspersons train regularly to keep fit and healthy. Even when there are no competitions, they need to practice the sport by themselves or under the supervision of a trainer or coach and maintain a high degree of proficiency in their particular sport. They usually specialise in one sport, such as cricket, tennis, swimming, boxing, and many others.
1.2. _____ Usually, training starts early at a young age to develop the level of skill required to become professional player. They start playing for their school and move on to district, state and national level.
1.3. _____ Most sportspeople compete as amateurs until they reach a sufficiently high standard to be offered payment for their performance. Professional sportspeople are usually paid on individual contracts. They may earn extra money from playing games, winning games or performing well.
1.4. _____ You don't have to work for a professional sports team to get into the industry. The Government recruits meritorious sportspersons through direct recruitment or through a competitive examination held by the Union Public Service Commission if they fulfill the requisite educational qualifications. Nationalised banks, armed forces, public sector undertakings and some private companies also recruit outstanding sportspersons.
1.5. _____Many amateurs are attracted to the field because of fame and high incomes, so the competition is intense especially for the popular sports. But there is always a demand for highly skilled and exceptionally talented sportspersons.
